How to Convert Square Feet to Square Meters

To convert square feet to square meters, multiply the square-foot measurement by 0.09290304. This exact conversion factor comes from the relationship between feet and meters. One foot equals exactly 0.3048 meters, and squaring that length conversion produces 0.09290304 square meters per square foot.

For example, a 100-square-foot bathroom contains 9.290304 square meters. Multiply 100 by 0.09290304 to get the result. A 200-square-foot floor equals 18.580608 m², while a 500-square-foot area equals 46.45152 m².

Square Feet to Square Meters Formula

Square meters = square feet × 0.09290304. For example, 150 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 13.935456 m².

How to Convert Square Meters to Square Feet

For the reverse calculation, multiply square meters by approximately 10.7639104167. You can also divide square meters by 0.09290304. A 20 m² room equals approximately 215.2782 square feet, while a 50 m² floor equals approximately 538.1955 square feet.

Square Meters to Square Feet Formula

Square feet = square meters × 10.7639104167. For example, 30 m² × 10.7639104167 = approximately 322.9173 sq ft.

500 sq ft 46.4515 m² Large flooring project
1,000 sq ft 92.9030 m² Whole-floor renovation

Why Square Feet and Square Meters Use Different Factors

Area conversion is not the same as length conversion. One foot equals 0.3048 meters, but one square foot does not equal 0.3048 square meters. A square foot has two dimensions, so the length conversion must be squared: 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304.

Using 0.3048 directly for square-foot conversion would create a substantial error. Always use the area factor when converting square feet, square meters, floor area or wall coverage.

Do not use the linear feet-to-meters factor for area.

For square footage, multiply by 0.09290304. The 0.3048 factor converts a single length in feet to meters, not square feet to square meters.

Simple Area Conversion

Convert Sq Ft to m² in Four Steps

Follow this process for rooms, tile projects, flooring, walls, property area and material coverage.

1

Find the Area

Use an existing square-foot measurement or multiply room length by width to calculate the total floor area.

2

Enter Square Feet

Type the square-foot value into the converter without changing it to a linear measurement.

3

Apply the Factor

The calculator multiplies square feet by exactly 0.09290304 to determine square meters.

4

Use the Metric Area

Apply the converted area to tile quantity, square-meter pricing, box coverage or material planning.

Area Conversion for Tile Projects

Using Square Feet and Square Meters for Floors, Walls and Tile

Convert Room Square Footage to Square Meters

For a rectangular room, multiply length by width in feet. A room measuring 12 feet by 10 feet contains 120 square feet. Multiply 120 by 0.09290304 and the same room contains approximately 11.1484 m².

If the room has an irregular shape, divide it into smaller rectangles, calculate each area and add the results. Use our How to Measure for Tile guide for more detailed measurement instructions.

Square Feet to Square Meters for Floor Tile

Floor plans in the United States commonly use square feet, while tile boxes and contractor quotes in other regions may use square meters. Converting the room area helps compare products and estimate how many metric cartons are needed.

Use the Floor Tile Calculator to measure the project in square feet. After converting to m², use the manufacturer's metric box coverage for the final carton calculation.

Square Feet to Square Meters for Wall Tile

Wall area is calculated by multiplying wall width by tiled height. For example, a wall that is 10 feet wide and 8 feet high contains 80 square feet, or approximately 7.4322 m².

When several walls use the same tile, calculate each surface separately and combine the totals. The Wall Tile Calculator can simplify bathroom, shower and feature-wall measurements.

Square Feet to m² for Shower Tile

A shower may contain several walls, a floor, curb, bench and niche. Add surfaces using the same tile, then convert the combined square footage to square meters. Keep shower wall tile and floor mosaic calculations separate when they use different products.

Use the Shower Tile Calculator before converting the final shower area.

Convert Tile Box Coverage

A carton may list coverage only in square feet or only in square meters. Multiply square feet per box by 0.09290304 to calculate m² per box. A carton covering 15.5 sq ft covers approximately 1.439997 m².

For the reverse calculation, a carton covering 1.44 m² covers approximately 15.5000 square feet. Use the Tile Box Coverage Calculator when converting total project area into complete cartons.

Convert Tile Prices Between Sq Ft and m²

Unit-price conversion is different from area conversion. To convert a tile price per square foot into a price per square meter, multiply by approximately 10.7639. A tile priced at $4 per sq ft is approximately $43.06 per m².

To convert price per square meter into price per square foot, divide by 10.7639. Use the Tile Price Per Square Foot Calculator or the Tile Price Per Square Meter Calculator for detailed material estimates.

Add Tile Waste After Conversion

The conversion changes the measurement unit, not the physical area. A 100-square-foot project remains 9.2903 m². If you add 10% waste, the purchase area becomes 110 sq ft or approximately 10.2193 m².

Apply the same waste percentage regardless of the measurement system. Review the Tile Waste Percentage guide when planning diagonal, herringbone or irregular layouts.

Convert area before comparing metric tile coverage.

If your room is measured in square feet and the tile box is labeled in square meters, convert one of the values so both use the same unit before dividing.
