Tiles per Box Calculator
Calculate how many tiles are in a box, how much area one carton covers and how many complete boxes your project needs. Enter tile dimensions, pieces per box, project area, waste allowance and box price to estimate coverage, purchase quantity, spare pieces and material cost.
Tiles per Box Estimator
Carton PlanningUnderstand Pieces, Coverage and Full Boxes
A tile carton can be described by pieces per box, square feet per box, square metres per box or all three. Accurate planning requires these values to agree with the exact product label.
Tile Size
Length and width determine the mathematical face area of one tile.
Pieces per Box
The manufacturer’s carton count determines how many whole tiles are supplied.
Box Coverage
Tile area multiplied by pieces estimates nominal coverage for one carton.
Listed Coverage
Current packaging should control the final order when it differs from nominal maths.
Waste
Extra area covers cuts, damage, pattern alignment and future repairs.
Full Boxes
Project quantities are rounded upward because partial cartons may not be available.
How the Tiles per Box Calculator Works
Enter tile length and width using one unit, then enter the number of pieces packed in one carton. The calculator converts the tile dimensions into square feet and square metres, multiplies by the piece count and reports the mathematical coverage of one full box.
A nominal 12×24-inch tile covers about two square feet. When eight pieces are packed in one carton, the calculated coverage is approximately 16 square feet. If the manufacturer lists 15.5 square feet, use the printed carton value for the project order because actual dimensions and packaging may differ.
Coverage per tile = tile length × tile width after unit conversion. Calculated box coverage = coverage per tile × pieces per box. Project boxes = project area with waste ÷ usable box coverage, rounded upward.
Use One Unit for Both Tile Sides
Tile length and width must use the same selected unit. Do not enter length in inches and width in millimetres. Convert one side first or use the tile size converter before calculating area.
Why Listed Coverage Can Differ
Nominal product names may not equal actual dimensions. Rectified edges, pressed edges, manufacturing calibre, mesh spacing and package rounding can change stated coverage. Current manufacturer information should take priority over a simple multiplication result.
Pieces per Box Are Product Specific
Two tiles with the same face size can be packed differently because of thickness, weight, material or manufacturer policy. Never assume every 600×600-millimetre tile has the same number of pieces per carton.
Confirm product code, pieces, coverage, shade, calibre, batch and weight before buying or combining boxes.
Mosaic Sheets Count as Pieces
For mesh-mounted mosaics, one complete sheet is normally treated as one piece. Enter the outer sheet dimensions and the number of sheets per box. Do not use the dimensions of one small chip for carton coverage.
Prefer Reliable Package Information
Mathematical coverage is useful for checking a label, but the final purchase should normally follow the current manufacturer’s stated carton coverage.
Calculated Coverage
Useful for comparison, early planning and identifying an obvious data-entry error.
Listed Coverage
Preferred for the final order when the exact current carton clearly states usable area.
Installer Takeoff
Useful for complex layouts, multiple products, borders, patterns and difficult cutting conditions.
Convert Project Area Into Complete Cartons
Enter the measured project area and choose square feet or square metres. The calculator adds the selected waste percentage, divides by the box coverage and rounds upward. Optional spare boxes are then added to the purchase quantity.
Apply Waste Before Box Rounding
Waste should reflect cuts, breakage, layout, product variation and repair needs. A 100-square-foot project with 10 percent waste becomes 110 square feet before dividing by carton coverage.
Round Up to Full Boxes
If the calculation produces 6.1 boxes, seven complete cartons are needed unless the supplier sells matching loose pieces. Rounding down creates an immediate shortage before installation begins.
Box Rounding Adds Overage
The final purchase may exceed the selected waste percentage because complete cartons contain fixed piece counts. This additional coverage is not automatically a mistake. It can support perimeter cuts, breakage and retained repair stock.
Add Spare Boxes Carefully
An extra unopened carton can be valuable for future repairs, especially when colour, finish or production batch may be discontinued. Consider storage space, return rules, project size and the likelihood of later damage.
Calculate Different Products Separately
Floor tile, wall tile, mosaics, borders, skirting and feature pieces often have different carton quantities. Separate calculations avoid combining incompatible coverage and wasting expensive decorative material.
Use Box Quantity to Build the Order
The optional price field multiplies the final number of cartons by the entered box price. The estimate can compare products, but taxes, delivery, handling, installation materials and labour should be added separately.
Price per Box Versus Price per Area
Retailers may advertise a price per square foot or square metre while selling complete boxes. Multiply the advertised area price by carton coverage to estimate a box price, then verify the actual checkout amount.
Shade, Calibre and Batch
Colour and dimensions can vary between production runs. Compare every carton label and purchase the required quantity together when possible. Blend tiles from several boxes during installation to distribute normal variation.
Broken or Damaged Pieces
Inspect cartons at delivery or collection. Photograph visible damage and follow the supplier’s reporting process promptly. One broken tile can materially affect a small carton, especially when the product is large format.
Returns and Restocking
Ask whether unopened cartons are returnable, whether restocking charges apply and whether special-order, clearance or imported stock is excluded. Keep receipts and avoid opening spare cartons until the installer confirms they are needed.
Weight and Safe Handling
Tile cartons can be heavy. Check the listed box weight, vehicle capacity, carrying route and storage location. Do not stack products beyond manufacturer guidance, and keep boxes dry, supported and protected from impact.

How Tile Size and Piece Count Affect Coverage
Examples below use nominal mathematical area. Always compare them with the exact carton label.
12×12 in, 10 Pieces
Nominal coverage is approximately 10 square feet per box.
12×24 in, 8 Pieces
Nominal coverage is approximately 16 square feet per box.
24×24 in, 4 Pieces
Nominal coverage is approximately 16 square feet per box.
300×600 mm, 8 Pieces
Nominal coverage is approximately 1.44 square metres per box.
600×600 mm, 4 Pieces
Nominal coverage is approximately 1.44 square metres per box.
600×1200 mm, 2 Pieces
Nominal coverage is approximately 1.44 square metres per box.
Common Questions About Carton Coverage
These answers cover pieces per box, coverage, project cartons, mosaics, waste, damaged tiles and package-label differences.
How do I calculate tiles per box coverage?
Calculate area per tile, multiply by the number of pieces in one carton and compare the result with the manufacturer’s listed coverage.
How many 12×24 tiles are usually in a box?
Piece count varies by product, thickness and manufacturer. Read the exact current carton label rather than assuming a standard number.
How many square feet does one box cover?
Multiply square feet per tile by pieces per box, or use the listed square-foot coverage printed on the carton.
Why is listed coverage different from my calculation?
Actual dimensions, nominal naming, mesh spacing, calibre and manufacturer rounding can create a small difference.
How do I calculate boxes for a project?
Add waste to project area, divide by box coverage and round upward to the next complete carton.
Should I add an extra box?
An extra carton may be useful for future repairs, but consider return rules, storage and the amount already added through waste and rounding.
How are mosaic sheets counted?
One complete mesh-mounted sheet is normally one piece. Use full sheet dimensions and sheets per box.
Can I combine boxes from different batches?
Only after checking shade, calibre, size and appearance. Different batches can vary visibly.
What if one tile in the box is broken?
Report damage promptly. Recalculate usable pieces and confirm whether replacement stock matches the same product and batch.
How accurate is the calculator?
It provides a planning estimate. The current carton label, actual tile dimensions, breakage and supplier packaging control the final order.
Check Every Carton Before You Order
Calculate pieces, box coverage, waste, full cartons and cost, then verify the current manufacturer label.
