Tile Quantity Calculator
Estimate how many tiles and complete boxes your project needs. Enter a known area or calculate area from dimensions, choose metric or imperial units, subtract untiled sections, add extra surfaces, enter tile size, waste, repair spares, carton details and price to build a practical purchase quantity.
Tile Quantity Estimator
Area to BoxesMove From Measured Area to a Real Tile Order
A complete quantity calculation includes net surface area, actual tile coverage, whole-piece rounding, waste, repair stock and carton packaging. Skipping any step can create shortages or excessive overage.
Measure Area
Use dimensions or enter a verified square-foot or square-metre total.
Adjust Area
Subtract large untiled sections and add connected surfaces.
Find Tile Coverage
Convert tile length and width into area per piece.
Round Up
Convert mathematical fractions into whole purchasable tiles.
Add Extras
Include cutting waste and intentional repair spares.
Buy Boxes
Round the final piece count to complete cartons.
How the Tile Quantity Calculator Works
Choose dimensions mode to multiply length by width, or choose known-area mode when reliable square footage or square metres are already available. Identical areas, deductions and additional tiled sections are then applied to create net project area.
The calculator converts tile dimensions into coverage per piece. It divides net area by tile coverage, rounds upward to a whole-tile base quantity, adds the selected waste percentage and repair tiles, then rounds the result to complete boxes.
Net area = base area × identical-area count − deductions + additional area. Base tiles = net area ÷ coverage per tile, rounded upward. Final boxes = base tiles plus waste and repair pieces ÷ tiles per box, rounded upward.
Dimensions Mode
Use length and width for a floor or length and tiled height for a wall. Measure finished boundaries wherever possible. Calculate different tile products separately so coverage, waste and cartons remain accurate.
Known-Area Mode
Use this mode when an architect, installer, drawing or earlier calculator provides a verified area. Confirm whether the supplied figure already includes deductions, extra surfaces or waste before adding them again.
Use Consistent Project Units
When metres are selected, dimensions use metres and area fields use square metres. When feet are selected, dimensions use feet and area fields use square feet. Tile dimensions may use metric or imperial units independently.
If a known area already includes an overage allowance, enter zero waste or remove that allowance before using the calculator.
Use Actual Product Information
Nominal tile size supports early planning, but actual dimensions and carton coverage may differ. Use the listed-coverage field when technical data provides a more precise area per tile.
Understand Each Number in the Result
The base quantity, waste-adjusted quantity and final carton quantity answer different planning questions.
Base Tiles
Whole pieces needed to cover net area before extras.
Waste Tiles
Extra pieces for cuts, breakage and layout conditions.
Repair Spares
Matching pieces deliberately stored after installation.
Purchased Tiles
Pieces supplied after rounding to complete boxes.
Build a Quantity From the Correct Surface
Net area should contain every surface receiving the selected tile and exclude only meaningful sections that definitely remain untiled. Careful adjustment prevents missing material and distorted waste percentages.
Floors
Measure length by width. Decide whether tile continues beneath cabinets, islands, appliances, vanities or future fixtures before deducting their footprints.
Walls
Multiply wall length by tiled height. Calculate walls with different heights separately. Add returns, niches, ledges and reveals where tile wraps around an opening or corner.
Doors and Windows
Large openings can reduce wall area. Small sockets, valves, pipes and drains usually remain included because complete tiles are purchased and cut around them.
Repeated Areas
Use the identical-area count only when measurements and product specifications are truly the same. Separate rooms when one has additional openings, pattern changes or a different waste allowance.
Irregular Shapes
Divide L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add the results. Calculate triangles as half of a matching rectangle. Curves may require smaller sections or a professional material takeoff.
Turn Base Tiles Into a Purchase Quantity
The base quantity describes ideal coverage. Real installations also need material for cuts and breakage, optional future repair pieces and complete cartons.
Choose a Waste Allowance
Five to 10 percent can suit a simple straight layout in a regular room. Ten to 15 percent is common for corners, doorways and plumbing cuts. Diagonal, herringbone, fragile stone or irregular spaces may require more.
Add Repair Spares Separately
Repair tiles are clean matching pieces retained after installation. Keeping them separate from waste shows how much material is expected to be consumed during fitting and how much remains for future damage.
Round to Complete Boxes
Divide final required pieces by tiles per box and round upward. If 53 tiles are needed and a carton contains eight, seven boxes supply 56 pieces.
Review Purchase Coverage
Purchase coverage can exceed net area by more than the selected waste percentage because carton rounding and repair spares add material. This overage is not automatically an error.
Estimate Material Cost
The calculator multiplies complete boxes by the entered box price. Taxes, delivery, adhesive, grout, trims, membranes, preparation, removal and labour should be budgeted separately.
Check Shade and Calibre
Compare product code, shade, calibre and batch across all cartons. Purchase the required quantity together when possible, blend material from several boxes and retain labelled spare tiles.

Calculate floors
Confirm net area, actual coverage, waste, repair pieces, tiles per box, price, shade, calibre, stock and return conditions before payment.
How Coverage Changes Quantity
Smaller pieces create a higher tile count, while larger pieces cover more area individually.
300×300 mm
Approximately 0.09 m² per tile.
300×600 mm
Approximately 0.18 m² per tile.
600×600 mm
Approximately 0.36 m² per tile.
12×12 inches
Approximately 1 ft² per tile.
12×24 inches
Approximately 2 ft² per tile.
Mosaic Sheets
Use the complete sheet dimensions rather than one chip.
Common Questions About Tile Quantities
These answers cover area, whole tiles, waste, repair stock, mosaics, complete cartons and listed coverage.
How do I calculate tile quantity?
Divide net project area by area per tile, round upward, add waste and repair pieces, then convert the total into complete boxes.
Can I enter a known area?
Yes. Select known-area mode and enter verified square metres or square feet.
Can the calculator find area from dimensions?
Yes. Select dimensions mode and enter floor length and width or wall length and tiled height.
Should I subtract doors and cabinets?
Subtract only large sections that definitely remain untiled. Keep small penetrations included.
How much waste should I add?
Ten percent is a common starting point, while complex patterns or irregular spaces may need more.
What are repair spares?
They are matching tiles intentionally kept after installation for future damage or alterations.
Can I enter metric and imperial tile sizes?
Yes. Tile dimensions can use millimetres, centimetres or inches.
How are mosaic sheets counted?
Use the full sheet dimensions and treat each sheet as one purchasable tile unit.
How are boxes calculated?
Final required pieces are divided by tiles per box and rounded upward.
How accurate is the result?
It is a planning estimate. Actual dimensions, carton coverage, cutting, breakage and installer technique can change the final order.
