How to Calculate Tile Price Per Square Meter
To calculate tile price per square meter, divide the price of one tile box by the number of square meters covered by that carton. This gives you a consistent unit price that can be used to compare tiles packaged in different quantities.
Suppose one box costs 55 and covers 1.44 m². Divide 55 by 1.44 and the tile cost is approximately 38.19 per square meter. Another carton might cost 70 but cover 2 m², producing a lower price of 35 per m². Although the second carton has a higher box price, it is cheaper for the same finished area.
Price per box ÷ square meters covered per box = tile material price per m². Multiply your purchase area by the unit price for a quick material estimate.
Why Use Price Per Square Meter?
Tiles are sold using several pricing methods. A retailer may show price per piece, price per box or price per square meter. Comparing carton prices alone can be misleading because each box may contain a different number of tiles and cover a different area.

How to Calculate Total Tile Cost
First measure the floor or wall in square meters. Add a realistic waste percentage, then divide the adjusted project area by the coverage of one box. Round the result up because tile is generally sold in complete cartons. Multiply the number of boxes by the price per box to calculate the material purchase cost.
For example, a 20 m² floor with 10% waste requires approximately 22 m² of tile. If one carton covers 1.44 m², 22 ÷ 1.44 = 15.28. You therefore need 16 complete boxes. At 55 per carton, the tile material cost is 880.
The exact square-meter calculation may suggest 15.28 boxes, but you normally cannot buy 0.28 of a carton. Your budget should therefore use the cost of 16 complete boxes.
How Much Waste Should You Add?
About 10% extra tile is a common starting allowance for many standard installations. Waste covers edge cuts, occasional breakage and pieces that cannot be reused elsewhere in the layout.

Tile price per square foot × 10.7639 = approximate tile price per square meter. Price per m² ÷ 10.7639 = approximate price per square foot.
Conversion Example
If tile costs 4 per square foot, multiply 4 by 10.7639. The equivalent price is about 43.06 per square meter. If another product costs 40 per m², divide 40 by 10.7639 and the equivalent square-foot price is about 3.72.

How to Calculate Installed Tile Cost Per Square Meter
The retail tile price is not the same as the installed tile cost. Begin with the actual number of cartons required, then add professional installation, adhesive, grout, preparation, waterproofing, old tile removal and other project-specific costs.
Once those costs are combined, divide the total by the finished area to find the effective installed price per m².
Why Waste Changes the Effective Cost
Suppose a room measures 20 m² but you purchase 22 m² after allowing 10% waste. You are paying for 22 m² of tile while covering only 20 m² of finished floor. Carton rounding can increase the actual purchase quantity further.
This means the effective material cost of the finished surface can be higher than the shelf price shown per square meter.
