Tiles per Square Foot Estimator
ft² DensityFind How Many Tiles Cover One Square Foot
Tile density shows the mathematical number of pieces needed to cover one square foot. Smaller tiles produce a higher density, while larger tiles produce a lower density.
Tile Dimensions
Length and width determine the face area of one tile.
Area per Tile
Convert both dimensions into feet and multiply them.
Tiles per ft²
Divide one square foot by the coverage of one tile.
Project Quantity
Multiply tile density by project area and round upward.
Waste Allowance
Add extra pieces for cuts, breakage, patterns and future repairs.
Box Rounding
Convert the waste-adjusted quantity into complete cartons.
How the Tile Per Square Foot Calculator Works
Enter tile length and width using one unit. The calculator converts both sides into feet, multiplies them to find square feet per tile and then divides one square foot by that coverage. The result shows the mathematical number of tiles needed for one square foot.
A 12×12-inch tile covers about one square foot, so the density is one tile per square foot. A 6×6-inch tile covers one-quarter square foot, so four tiles cover one square foot. A 12×24-inch tile covers about two square feet, so the density is 0.5 tile per square foot.
Area per tile = tile length in feet × tile width in feet. Tiles per square foot = 1 ÷ area per tile. Project tiles = project area × tile density, rounded upward, then adjusted for waste.
Use the Same Unit for Both Tile Sides
Do not enter one side in inches and the other in millimetres under one selection. Convert one dimension first or use the tile size converter. Mixed units create an incorrect area and quantity.
Nominal Size Versus Actual Coverage
A tile marketed as 12×12 inches may not measure exactly one square foot. Manufacturing tolerances, edge shape and modular design can change the actual face size. Use the optional listed-coverage field when the manufacturer provides a precise square-foot value per tile.
Why Density Can Be a Decimal
Large tiles can cover more than one square foot, so fewer than one tile may be needed mathematically for each square foot. A density of 0.25 means one tile covers approximately four square feet. Physical orders must still be rounded to whole pieces.
It does not replace whole-tile rounding, waste, carton quantities or the current package label.
Mosaic Sheets and Small Tiles
For mesh-mounted mosaics, use the dimensions of one complete sheet rather than one individual chip. The sheet is the purchasable piece and normally controls coverage, carton count and project quantity.
Common Tiles per Square Foot
These values use nominal mathematical dimensions. Actual manufactured size and package coverage may differ.
6×6 inches
Approximately 4 tiles per square foot.
12×12 inches
Approximately 1 tile per square foot.
12×24 inches
Approximately 0.5 tile per square foot.
24×24 inches
Approximately 0.25 tile per square foot.
Convert Tile Density Into a Full Order
After density is known, multiply it by project square footage and round upward to a whole-tile base quantity. Add waste and repair spares, then divide by pieces per box and round upward again.
Base Tiles
Base quantity covers the measured area before waste. If the mathematical result is 47.2 tiles, round upward to 48. A fraction cannot be purchased or installed as a complete tile without first buying the whole piece.
Waste Tiles
Waste supports perimeter cuts, doorways, corners, breakage, pattern alignment and product variation. Ten percent is a common starting point for many straight layouts, but complex patterns or irregular rooms may need more.
Repair Spares
Repair spares are separate from installation waste. They are clean matching tiles intentionally stored after completion. A small reserve can help when future plumbing, cabinet, threshold or floor repairs require replacement pieces.
Complete Boxes
Divide the final tile count by pieces per carton and round upward. If 53 tiles are required and each box contains ten, six boxes provide 60 pieces. The seven additional tiles are box-rounding overage.
Purchase Coverage
The calculator multiplies total purchased pieces by coverage per tile. This shows how much area the complete order can cover and helps distinguish selected waste from additional overage caused by carton rounding.
Use the Right Coverage for the Product
Tile density can be calculated from inches, millimetres or centimetres. The result is converted into square feet so metric and imperial products can be compared with the same project area.
Millimetre Tiles
A 300×300-millimetre tile covers approximately 0.969 square foot, so about 1.032 tiles cover one square foot. A 600×600-millimetre tile covers approximately 3.875 square feet, so about 0.258 tile covers one square foot.
Centimetre Tiles
A 30×60-centimetre tile covers approximately 1.938 square feet, so about 0.516 tile covers one square foot. The calculator handles the conversion automatically.
Listed Coverage per Tile
When a technical sheet gives precise coverage per tile, enter that value to override nominal dimension maths. Listed coverage can account for actual product dimensions more accurately, although package coverage remains the final purchase reference.
Grout Joints
Grout width affects layout spacing and grout quantity. Most quantity calculations use tile or carton coverage rather than subtracting joints from project area. Use the tile layout calculator when joint spacing and edge cuts matter.
Irregular Areas
Divide L-shaped rooms into rectangles, calculate each area and add them. Calculate triangles as half of a matching rectangle. Avoid adding separate sections that overlap, because duplicated area inflates the tile quantity.

Use Tile Density Across Different Projects
The same tiles-per-square-foot ratio can support many surfaces when each project area is measured accurately and product coverage remains unchanged.
Bathroom Floors
Measure the finished floor and subtract only large permanently untiled areas.
Shower Walls
Multiply wall length by tiled height and subtract large openings.
Kitchen Backsplashes
Measure each section separately around cabinets and appliances.
Entryways
Include closets or adjoining landings when the same tile continues.
Fireplace Surrounds
Calculate each face, return and hearth section without overlap.
Commercial Floors
Use verified plans, site measurements and product-specific waste allowances.
Common Questions About Tile Density
These answers cover area per tile, pieces per square foot, metric sizes, waste, cartons, mosaics and package coverage.
How do I calculate tiles per square foot?
Convert tile length and width into feet, multiply them and divide one square foot by the tile’s square-foot area.
How many 12×12 tiles are in one square foot?
One nominal 12×12-inch tile covers approximately one square foot before actual-size differences and waste.
How many 6×6 tiles are in one square foot?
Four nominal 6×6-inch tiles cover one square foot before grout joints and waste.
How many 12×24 tiles are needed per square foot?
One tile covers about two square feet, so the density is approximately 0.5 tile per square foot.
Can I enter metric tile sizes?
Yes. Enter millimetres or centimetres and the calculator converts tile coverage into square feet.
Should I use nominal or actual tile size?
Use actual dimensions or listed coverage for precise planning. Nominal size is suitable for an early estimate.
Does the calculator include waste?
Yes. It adds the selected waste percentage after calculating the rounded base quantity.
How are mosaic sheets calculated?
Use the outside dimensions of one complete sheet and count each sheet as one purchasable piece.
How do I calculate boxes?
Divide the waste-adjusted tile count plus spares by pieces per box and round upward.
How accurate is the estimate?
It is a planning result. Actual dimensions, listed carton coverage, cuts, breakage and installation technique can change the order.
