Where Our Information Comes From

Not every source has equal authority. We give greater weight to recognized standards, official measurement references and the technical documentation for the actual product being estimated.

We consult the current TCNA Handbook and relevant ANSI tile-installation standards when discussing accepted methods, substrate requirements, movement accommodation and installation materials.

Calculation Method

How TileCalcPro Produces an Estimate

Most TileCalcPro tools begin with geometry. A rectangular surface is calculated by multiplying length by width. An L-shaped or irregular room is divided into non-overlapping rectangles, then the areas are added. Wall projects use wall width multiplied by tiled height, with large untiled openings deducted when appropriate. The result is converted into square feet or square meters before tile coverage is applied.

Core quantity formula

Base tiles = total tiled area ÷ area of one tile. Planned tiles = base tiles × (1 + waste percentage). Boxes = planned tiles ÷ tiles or coverage per box, rounded up.

Every stage is rounded deliberately. The base mathematical result may include part of a tile, but a purchase cannot include a fraction of a physical tile. The box result must also be rounded upward because most products are sold in complete cartons. Measurement Conversions

Calculators convert room and tile measurements into compatible units before division. One foot is exactly 0.3048 meter, and one inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters. Area conversions are squared, so one square meter equals approximately 10.7639 square feet. We retain more precision inside the calculation than is normally shown to the user, then display a practical rounded result.

Nominal Size Versus Actual Size

A tile described as 12×24 inches may not measure exactly 12 by 24 inches. Grout joints, manufacturing caliber and modular design can affect installed coverage. Whenever possible, carton coverage or the manufacturer’s actual dimensions should take priority over a nominal label. Waste Allowances

Waste is not presented as a universal rule. A straightforward room with a straight pattern may need less extra material than a diagonal layout, herringbone design, natural stone installation or room with many corners. Grout, Adhesive and Mortar

Material calculators require more than floor area. Grout depends on tile length, tile width, joint width, joint depth and product density. Mortar and adhesive coverage can change with tile format, trowel notch, substrate flatness, application technique and required contact. How We Handle Prices and Cost Ranges

Tile prices and labor rates are highly local and can change quickly. Material type alone does not determine cost. Brand, finish, size, grade, availability, freight, tax and minimum carton quantities all matter. Installation cost can also include demolition, disposal, substrate repair, leveling, waterproofing, trim, movement joints and pattern complexity.

For these reasons, cost calculators use editable assumptions or broad planning ranges rather than claiming a single national price. We may compare current supplier listings, manufacturer suggested pricing and published contractor guidance, but examples are dated and labelled as estimates. The user’s local quote remains the decision-ready source.

Update Frequency

Calculation formulas are reviewed when we add features or identify an error. Standards and technical references are checked when new editions or important manufacturer updates become available. Cost pages receive more frequent attention because prices change faster than geometry. An older publication date does not automatically make a stable conversion formula incorrect, while a recent price may already be outdated in another city.

Corrections

We correct verified errors as soon as practical. A correction may change calculator logic, wording, an external link, a formula explanation or an example. Readers can use the contact page to report a problem. Useful reports include the page URL, the values entered, the result received, the expected result and the source supporting the correction.

Source Selection and Conflict Resolution

When several sources address the same question, we compare their scope before choosing which one controls the answer. A measurement definition from NIST is preferred for unit conversion, while a manufacturer’s current technical sheet is preferred for the coverage of its own grout, mortar or membrane. TCNA and ANSI references provide broader installation context, but they do not replace the written requirements of a proprietary system. Retail listings can help illustrate package size or price, yet they are not used to establish an installation standard.

Sources occasionally disagree because they describe different conditions. One grout estimate may assume a deeper joint, another mortar chart may use a different trowel, and two retailers may list tiles with the same nominal size but different carton coverage. We do not average incompatible figures simply to create one convenient number. Instead, the calculator asks for the variables that matter, presents a range where appropriate, or explains why the user must consult the selected product. When a disagreement cannot be resolved confidently, we state the uncertainty rather than presenting a precise-looking answer.

Version Control and Page Consistency

Related calculators should apply the same core conversions and rounding rules. Are TileCalcPro calculations exact?

The formulas are deterministic, but the result is only as accurate as the measurements and product information entered. Real projects also include cuts, breakage, out-of-square walls and installation choices that a general calculator cannot fully predict.

Why do you round tile boxes up?

Most tile is sold in complete cartons. A result of 8.1 boxes still requires nine boxes, so downward rounding would create a shortage. The unused balance can also provide matching repair pieces.

Why can manufacturer coverage differ from your result?

Manufacturers test or calculate coverage for a specific product, joint, trowel or application. Their current technical sheet is more product-specific than a general estimator and should take priority.

Where do waste percentages come from?

Waste ranges reflect common planning practice and pattern complexity. They are adjustable because room shape, material quality, cuts and layout can change the appropriate allowance.

How are cost estimates created?

Cost tools use editable local inputs, current supplier observations or broad published ranges. They are budget guides, not quotations, and should be replaced by actual supplier and installer prices before purchase.

Do you use AI-generated information as a source?

Automated tools may assist with organization or quality checks, but they are not treated as authoritative evidence. Factual claims should be traceable to standards, official references, technical documents or clearly identified market observations.

Can I report an incorrect calculation?
