Calculate Quantity Before Comparing Dealer Prices

A useful tile budget begins with accurate area, current carton coverage, waste and complete-box rounding. Dealer, showroom, contractor or online quotations can then be entered in Indian rupees.

01

Floor Areas

Use room length and width for halls, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, balconies, shops and offices.

02

Wall Areas

Use wall length and tiled height for bathrooms, kitchens, dado work, splashbacks and feature walls.

03

Repeated Areas

Use the count field for identical rooms, walls, balconies or apartment units.

04

INR Pricing

Enter a current carton price instead of relying on one fixed national rate.

05

Waste Allowance

Add extra material for cuts, breakage, pattern direction, shade selection and future repairs.

06

Full Cartons

Round upward and verify coverage, batch, shade, calibre and return terms before purchasing.

Measurement Method

How to Calculate Tiles in India

Measure the finished length and width of a floor, or the length and tiled height of a wall. Multiply those dimensions to calculate area. For identical rooms or walls, multiply by the number of areas. Subtract only large surfaces that definitely will not receive tile.

A room measuring 4 metres by 3 metres covers 12 square metres. A 600×600-millimetre tile covers 0.36 square metres, so the base requirement is approximately 34 tiles after upward rounding. Adding 10 percent waste produces 38 tiles. If one carton contains four tiles, ten complete boxes provide 40 pieces.

India tile quantity formula

Net area = length × width × number of identical areas − deductions. Tiles required = net area ÷ one tile’s coverage, then add waste. Boxes required = tiles with waste ÷ tiles per carton, rounded upward.

Use Finished Site Dimensions

Architectural drawings and contractor measurements are useful for early budgets, but final orders should use site dimensions wherever possible. Plaster, screed, skirting, wardrobes, kitchen units, door frames and levelling work can change the finished tiled footprint.

Metres, Feet and Millimetres

Indian projects may use square feet for room quotations and square metres for product or contractor calculations. Tiles are commonly labelled in millimetres, centimetres or inches. Select the correct units and keep each input consistent.

Meaningful Deductions

Subtract large doors, windows, fixed cabinets or untiled wall panels only when they genuinely reduce the order. Electrical boxes, pipe holes, floor drains and small vents usually remain included because full tiles still have to be purchased and cut.

Use the current carton label

Actual square-metre or square-foot coverage and pieces per box should take priority over nominal dimensions.

Irregular Rooms and Walls

Divide an L-shaped room into rectangles, calculate each section and add the results. Triangular areas can be estimated as half of a matching rectangle. Record every dimension on a labelled sketch so no area is missed or counted twice.

Waste Planning

Choose Extra Tile for the Layout

The appropriate allowance depends on room shape, pattern, tile size, cutting plan, product fragility and whether matching stock will remain available later.

5–10 Percent

A possible range for a straight layout in a regular space with efficient repeated cuts.

10–15 Percent

A practical allowance for many homes with corners, doorways, plumbing cuts and moderate alignment work.

15–20 Percent or More

Consider more for diagonal, herringbone, marble, fragile products, irregular rooms or strict shade selection.

Boxes and Purchasing

Convert Area Into a Practical Tile Order

After adding waste, divide the required tile quantity by pieces per carton and round upward. If the result is 8.1 boxes, nine complete cartons are normally required unless the dealer sells matching loose pieces from the same production batch.

Dealers may quote tiles per square foot, square metre, piece or box. Keep the price basis consistent with the quantity. When a quote is per carton, use the rounded box count. When it is per square foot, multiply by the purchase area including waste.

Check Pieces and Coverage per Box

Products with the same nominal tile size can contain different numbers of pieces. Vitrified, ceramic, porcelain, mosaic, elevation and decorative tiles may use different packaging. Read the current label for pieces, coverage, shade and calibre details.

Shade and Calibre

Tiles from different manufacturing batches can vary in colour or dimensions. Compare shade and calibre information on every carton. Purchase the required quantity together when possible, mix tiles from several boxes during installation and retain a labelled repair reserve.

Delivery and Breakage

Transport, unloading and storage can affect usable quantity. Inspect cartons when delivered and note visible damage. Large-format slabs, long-distance freight, upper-floor handling and fragile edges may justify a more cautious waste allowance.

Returns and Exchange Terms

Ask whether unopened cartons can be returned, whether exchange is limited to the same batch and whether freight or restocking charges apply. A return option supports safer ordering, but matching an old batch later may still be impossible.

Tile Cost in Indian Rupees

Build an Editable INR Budget

Tile prices differ by city, manufacturer, material, format, finish, design, dealer, quantity and transport distance. Instead of using one fixed India-wide rate, the calculator asks for the current carton price for the exact product being considered.

Material Cost

Tile material cost is calculated from full cartons multiplied by price per carton. The result reflects complete purchasable boxes rather than only the exact mathematical tile count. A small quantity increase can therefore add another full box.

Labour Estimate

The optional labour field uses an entered rate per square metre and multiplies it by the net area. It is a planning amount, not a contractor quotation. Labour can change with demolition, screed work, waterproofing, skirting, tile size, pattern, stairs and site access.

Adhesive, Grout and Delivery

Use the extra-cost field for a combined allowance or calculate materials separately. Adhesive, grout, spacers, levelling clips, trims, waterproofing, freight, unloading and floor preparation can add meaningful cost. Related tools include the grout calculator, adhesive calculator and spacer calculator.

GST and Quotation Scope

When comparing quotations, check whether GST, transport, unloading, installation materials, skirting, cutting, demolition and disposal are included. A lower tile price does not always create a lower completed-project cost. Compare every quotation using the same quantity and scope.

Use Fresh Dealer Quotes

Enter a current INR price whenever preparing to buy. Promotions, inventory, freight, fuel, taxes, imported inputs and dealer policies can change. The calculator stores no universal Indian tile rate and does not guarantee that an older quotation remains available.

India Tile Calculator FAQs

Common Questions About Tiles, Boxes and INR Cost

These answers cover recurring questions about square feet, square metres, common tile sizes, waste, cartons, labour and dealer quotations.

How do I calculate tiles for a room in India?

Multiply room length by width, subtract large untiled areas, divide by tile or carton coverage, add waste and round upward to complete boxes.

How many 600×600 tiles cover 100 square feet?

A nominal 600×600-millimetre tile covers about 3.88 square feet, so the base quantity is approximately 26 tiles before waste and carton rounding.

How much extra tile should I buy?

About 10 percent is common for simple layouts. Irregular rooms, diagonal patterns, fragile products or difficult matching may need 15 to 20 percent.

Should I use price per square foot or price per box?

Use the same basis provided by the dealer. This calculator uses carton price because the purchase quantity is rounded to complete boxes.

Does the calculator include labour?

Yes, optionally. Enter a current labour rate per square metre, but treat the result as planning rather than a contractor quotation.

Can I calculate bathroom wall tiles?

Yes. Enter wall length as the first dimension and tiled height as the second, then subtract large doors, windows or untiled panels.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

Subtract large openings that materially reduce coverage. Keep small outlets, pipes and drain cuts included because full tiles are still purchased.

How do I calculate boxes of tile?

Divide tiles required after waste by pieces per box and round upward, or divide purchase area by current carton coverage.

Why do tile prices differ between Indian cities?

Manufacturer, freight, dealer margin, stock, product origin, finish, taxes, transport distance and order volume can affect the quote.

How accurate is the estimate?

It is a planning result based on your inputs. Finished dimensions, actual carton coverage, breakage, layout and installer technique can change the order.
