How the Tile Area Calculator Works
Enter the main surface length and width, or wall length and tiled height. The calculator multiplies those dimensions, applies the number of identical areas, subtracts untiled deductions and adds any extra tiled sections.
A floor measuring 4 metres by 3 metres covers 12 square metres. If a fixed cabinet footprint removes 1 square metre and a connected landing adds 2 square metres, the net tiled area becomes 13 square metres before waste.
Net tiled area = length × width × identical-area count − deductions + additional tiled area. Required tiles = net area ÷ coverage per tile, rounded upward, then adjusted for waste and full boxes.
Use Finished Dimensions
Measure the surface that will actually receive tile. Plaster, backer boards, screed, waterproofing, skirting removal, cabinets and thresholds can change the final footprint from early plans.
Choose Metres or Feet
Select one project unit and keep the main dimensions, deductions and extra areas consistent. The calculator converts the result internally so metric and imperial tile sizes can still be used.
Calculate Floors and Walls Separately
Combine surfaces only when they use the same tile, waste allowance and carton details. Bathroom floors, shower walls and decorative borders often need separate calculations because their products and cutting conditions differ.
The final order must still include waste, whole-tile rounding and complete carton quantities.
Measure More Than Once

Build a Reliable Net Tiled Area
Net area should reflect the surfaces receiving the selected tile. Deductions reduce coverage, while additions capture connected sections that are easy to overlook.
Doors and Windows
Large openings may be deducted from wall area. Small sockets, valves and pipe penetrations normally remain included because complete tiles are still purchased and cut around them.
Cabinets and Fixtures
Subtract fixed cabinets, built-in baths or equipment footprints only when tile definitely stops at their edges. Confirm whether flooring continues beneath appliances or future cabinetry.
Closets and Landings
Add closets, pantry floors, hallway transitions and adjoining landings when the same tile continues. Measure each area separately and avoid overlapping rectangles.
Niches, Returns and Ledges
Window reveals, shower niches, bench faces, curb returns and ledges can add meaningful coverage. Record each surface on a sketch and count each face once.
Triangles and Curves
Calculate a triangle as half of a matching rectangle. Curved areas can be divided into smaller sections for planning, though expensive or limited-stock products may justify a professional takeoff.
Turn Net Area Into a Practical Order
After net area is known, the calculator converts tile dimensions into coverage per piece. It divides the project area by that coverage, rounds upward to whole tiles, adds waste and then rounds again to complete cartons.
Coverage per Tile
A 600×600-millimetre tile covers 0.36 square metres. A 12×24-inch tile covers about two square feet. Actual product dimensions and carton coverage may differ from nominal maths.
Waste Allowance
Five to 10 percent may suit a simple straight layout. Ten to 15 percent is common for rooms with corners, doorways and plumbing cuts. Diagonal, herringbone, fragile stone or irregular layouts may require more.
Full Boxes
Divide the waste-adjusted tile quantity by pieces per box and round upward. A result of 8.1 boxes requires nine complete cartons unless matching loose pieces are available.
Purchase Coverage
Purchase coverage equals total pieces bought multiplied by area per tile. It can exceed net area by more than the selected waste percentage because complete-box rounding adds material.
Material Cost
The optional box-price input multiplies complete cartons by the entered amount. Delivery, tax, adhesive, grout, trims, waterproofing, preparation and labour should be estimated separately.
