Translate Tile Dimensions Without Guessing

Tile packaging, architectural drawings and retailer listings may use different units. A converter places every dimension and coverage value on a common basis so products can be compared accurately.

01

Inches

Common for nominal tile sizes such as 12×12, 12×24 and 24×24.

02

Millimetres

Common for metric products such as 300×600, 600×600 and 600×1200.

03

Centimetres

Useful for smaller mosaics, wall tiles and quick metric comparisons.

04

Feet

Useful when matching tile coverage with room measurements in square feet.

05

Metres

Useful for large slabs and area calculations expressed in square metres.

06

Coverage

Tile area multiplied by pieces per box estimates nominal carton coverage.

How It Works

Convert Tile Length, Width and Area

Enter tile length and width using the same unit, then select that unit from the menu. The converter changes both dimensions into inches, feet, millimetres, centimetres and metres. It also multiplies converted length by converted width to calculate coverage per tile.

A nominal 12×24-inch tile converts to approximately 304.8×609.6 millimetres or 30.48×60.96 centimetres. Its mathematical area is about two square feet or 0.1858 square metres before allowing for manufacturing tolerances, chamfers, joints or package rounding.

Tile size conversion formulas

Inches to millimetres: inches × 25.4. Millimetres to inches: millimetres ÷ 25.4. Tile area: converted length × converted width. Box coverage: tile area × pieces per box.

Length Conversion and Area Conversion Differ

Linear dimensions use one conversion factor, while area uses the factor twice. One foot equals 0.3048 metres, but one square foot equals approximately 0.092903 square metres. Converting the two tile sides first and multiplying them avoids a common area error.

Nominal Size Versus Actual Size

A product described as 12×24 inches may have slightly different actual dimensions. Manufacturers can use nominal naming for a size family while the physical tile is designed around a grout module. Use measured or published actual dimensions for precise layout planning.

Include Complete Mosaic Sheets

For mesh-mounted mosaics, enter the outside length and width of one complete sheet, not one chip. Individual chip dimensions help with design decisions, but the sheet controls coverage, quantity and box calculations.

Package coverage remains the final reference

Mathematical area supports comparison, but current square-foot or square-metre coverage printed on the carton should guide the purchase.

Keep Length and Width in One Unit

Do not enter length in inches and width in centimetres under one selection. Convert one dimension first or choose the unit matching both values. Mixed inputs create an incorrect tile area and every quantity based on it.

Common Tile Measurement Relationships

These fixed relationships support accurate conversion between imperial and metric product labels.

1 inch

Exactly 25.4 millimetres or 2.54 centimetres.

1 foot

Exactly 12 inches, 304.8 millimetres or 0.3048 metres.

1 square foot

Approximately 0.092903 square metres.

1 square metre

Approximately 10.7639 square feet.

Understanding Converted Coverage

Use Tile Area to Estimate Quantity

Once area per tile is known, project area can be divided by that value to estimate the mathematical number of pieces. Always round upward to whole tiles, add waste and then round again to complete boxes.

Tiles per Square Foot

Divide one square foot by the tile’s square-foot area. A 12×12-inch tile mathematically equals one tile per square foot. A 6×6-inch tile covers one-quarter square foot, so four pieces cover one square foot before joints and waste.

Tiles per Square Metre

Divide one square metre by tile area in square metres. A 600×600-millimetre tile covers 0.36 square metres, so approximately 2.78 tiles cover one square metre before whole-piece rounding.

Comparison Area

The converter can compare the entered tile against one or ten square feet or square metres. The result shows the mathematical piece count for that area, helping users understand the scale of small mosaics, standard tiles and large slabs.

Grout Joints and Coverage

Quantity calculators commonly use tile or carton coverage rather than subtracting grout joints from room area. Joint spacing affects layout dimensions and grout quantity, while package coverage generally reflects the manufacturer’s intended module.

Cut Pieces Still Consume Tiles

A half tile at one edge may create an offcut usable elsewhere, but reuse is not guaranteed. Tile density provides a base quantity only. Room shape, pattern, cuts, breakage and repair stock determine the final order.

Imperial and Metric Size Matching

Why Similar Labels May Not Mean Identical Tiles

Metric and imperial labels are often treated as equivalents for merchandising, but converted dimensions may not match exactly. A 300×600-millimetre tile is approximately 11.81×23.62 inches, not exactly 12×24 inches.

Do Not Mix Near-Matching Sizes Automatically

Tiles with similar labels can differ enough to disrupt grout lines, patterns and modular layouts. Do not combine 300×600-millimetre material with nominal 12×24-inch material unless the actual dimensions, thickness, edges and manufacturer guidance confirm compatibility.

Calibre and Manufacturing Variation

Some fired products are sorted into calibre groups because final dimensions vary slightly. Compare carton labels across the complete order. Even products from the same collection can require consistent calibre for aligned joints.

Rectified and Pressed Edges

Rectified tiles are mechanically finished for more consistent dimensions, while pressed-edge products may have rounded or tapered sides. Edge type can influence practical joint width and the difference between face measurement and installation module.

Thickness Is a Separate Measurement

This converter focuses on length, width and area. Tile thickness affects transitions, trim profiles, floor height and handling, but it does not change face coverage. Convert thickness separately when coordinating adjacent materials.

Pattern Modules

Modular patterns combine two or more tile sizes in fixed ratios. Converting each tile independently does not establish the percentage of each size required. Use a pattern-specific calculator or the manufacturer’s module diagram.

Tile Size Converter FAQs

Common Questions About Tile Dimensions

These answers cover inches, millimetres, area, box coverage, nominal sizes, mosaics and metric-to-imperial matching.

How do I convert tile inches to millimetres?

Multiply each inch measurement by 25.4. Convert length and width separately before calculating area.

What is a 12×24 tile in millimetres?

The exact mathematical conversion is 304.8×609.6 millimetres, although the actual manufactured tile may differ.

Is 300×600 mm the same as 12×24 inches?

No. It is close, but 300×600 millimetres equals approximately 11.81×23.62 inches.

How do I calculate area per tile?

Convert length and width into the same unit, then multiply them. Use feet for ft² or metres for m².

How many 600×600 tiles cover one square metre?

One tile covers 0.36 m², so approximately 2.78 tiles cover one square metre before rounding and waste.

How do I calculate box coverage?

Multiply area per tile by the number of tiles in one box, then compare with the carton’s listed coverage.

Should I enter one mosaic chip or the sheet?

Enter the full sheet dimensions for coverage calculations. Chip size alone does not represent the purchasable unit.

Does grout width change tile size?

No, but it changes the installation module and layout. Use a layout calculator when joint spacing matters.

Can similar metric and imperial tiles be mixed?

Only after confirming actual dimensions, thickness, edges, calibre and manufacturer compatibility.

How accurate is the converter?

The mathematical conversions are precise, but nominal product names, manufacturing tolerances and listed carton coverage can differ.
