Calculate Bags From Adjusted Coverage

Begin with the exact area that will receive tile mortar. Multiply length by width for every rectangular section, add connected areas and subtract only substantial openings that will remain completely untiled. Small penetrations still need mortar around their edges, so removing every outlet, drain or pipe can make the estimate unnecessarily low.

Tile Mortar Formula

Net tiled area × waste factor ÷ effective coverage per bag = working bags. Effective coverage equals the printed coverage reduced for back-buttering, surface variation, thicker bedding and normal site conditions. Round upward and then add any intentional unopened reserve.

Use Printed Coverage as the Base

A bag may display a coverage range because the same mortar can be applied with several notch sizes. Use the coverage associated with the notch and tile format you plan to install. Do not automatically use the highest number on the package; that value may assume a smaller notch and exceptionally flat surfaces.

Reduce Coverage for Real Conditions

The adjustment field provides a simple way to model extra consumption. A flat floor with conventional tile may need only a modest reduction. A large porcelain tile with deep back ribs, a rough substrate or extensive back-buttering may need a larger one. The result remains an estimate, so inspect mortar transfer while working.

Round to Complete Bags

Mortar is normally sold in sealed bags. Even when the arithmetic produces 3.1 bags, the purchase must be four bags. That package rounding often creates enough spare material without adding another reserve bag.

Do not choose a mortar by quantity alone.

The product must be compatible with the tile body, tile size, substrate, waterproofing or uncoupling membrane, environment and required working time.
